Atmospheric perspective creates a sense of distance through the appearance of intervening air. Distant forms often show less detail and contrast than nearby ones, and their colours can shift towards the surrounding haze.
A painter can use those differences to separate planes in a landscape without relying only on converging lines. Look at the sharpness of edges and the range between light and dark. The farthest mountain may feel distant partly because it contains less visual information than the foreground.
