Identify the recurring situation in which the product becomes useful again. Ask how often that situation actually occurs and what the user currently does about it. Design the return journey around that need. A product used monthly may be doing its job perfectly well; forcing daily engagement can make it less welcome.
What brings someone back?
A reminder can prompt a visit. It cannot create a reason to care.
A small example
A household archive becomes useful when a document expires or a school asks for a copy. A useful return path leads directly to that document rather than to a generic feed.
Keep in mind
Frequency is not the same as value. Judge return behaviour against the job the product serves.
